An environmental insurgency is the scenario driving the majority of Canadian army training in Medicine Hat this week.

Approximately 300 soldiers are in their last week of training with Task Force 3/09, set for deployment to Afghanistan in the fall. This final week of training for members of the Canadian army and reserves, known as Exercise Total Ram, will intensify.

Simulated explosions may occur over the course of the week using Hollywood-style special effects.

According to Capt. Darren Hart, who has been overseeing the execution of heavily-scripted military training within the city, the members of the Provincial Reconstruction Team (PRT) are piecing together the details of a storyline built to reflect challenges they could face in Afghanistan.

The various clues or "bread crumbs" brought them Monday to a point where decisions needed to be made for the appropriate course of action.

"It’s a complex scenario in Afghanistan and our training is complex to reflect that," said Hart.

The scenario written for soldiers is of an insurgent leader known as Mr. Pink, who happens to have an ax to grind against our mayor and city. Mr. Pink is angry after hearing about a major development project which is to occur in Police Point Park. Mr. Pink and a group of environmentalist "nomads" (played by paid actors) are linked to insurgent attacks against the city and military, which the PRT needs to address. The nomads have also staged protests.

The challenge for the soldiers in the training scenario is to first determine the source of the problem and address those concerns, says Hart.

From a public perspective, this portion of the scenario means an increase in patrols and convoys through the city. Residents may also see soldiers conducting vehicle searches, but this is only for military players in civilian clothing. Soldiers will not interfere with or search citizens’ vehicles.

There may be some minor traffic delays in parts of the city.

The explosives are not real and personnel are trained in the use of these special effects.

Rather than STOP and say, 'Woops! I'm headed in the wrong direction,’ we tend to place a premium on projecting a consistent image of ourselves and try to rationalize our initial decision despite increasing evidence suggesting we ought to do the contrary. B M Staw
